Do I need A Clutch Kit?

Question:

Dear Motorhead,

I have a stock 2009 Yamaha Grizzly 700 Ducks Unlimited and have the opportunity to buy Maxxis Bighorn 6 Ply Radials on Vision Bruiser rims.

Can I run this on my Grizzly WITHOUT changing the clutch or the weights in the clutch? I just want to know if I can bolt on and go. Also will loose or gain anything?

Thanks for your help.

Heath

Response:

Thanks for your email!

Here’s the deal. When you increase the diameter of your tires you change the complete function of the CVT.

Most people do not change their clutching with the addition of larger tires however, they actually loose performance when they do this.

Sure, traction increases in mud but everything else suffers – in proportion to the increase in diameter of the new tires and wheels.

So, the best thing you can do is contact Team Industries or Dalton Pro and find out about the availability of a clutch kit – which will likely include both primary and secondary pulley tuning components.

At the very least you need to increase your engagement RPM to ensure belt life is not hindered or in the case of the Grizzly the sprag clutch used for engagement is not stressed and overheated when running slow for long periods.

Hope this helps,

Motorhead Mark
